Annette Stevenson defied expectations, winning the One Miler at Nationals and finishing in the top 10 for both the 5K and 10K, showing the world what it means to be fierce at every stage of life.

At 76 years young, Annette “Big Red” Stevenson is living proof that strength has no age limit and determination has no expiration date. From Jacksonville’s local senior games to the bright stage of the National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa, Annette has shown the world that she can be Strong at Any Age and FIERCE at Every Stage!

This summer, Annette delivered an unforgettable performance, capturing 1st place in the One Mile race in her age group, while also finishing top 10 in both the 5K and 10K races. Her journey to victory is one fueled by resilience, smart training, and an unshakable spirit.

The Road to Nationals

Annette didn’t start out dreaming of national medals. In fact, she resisted the idea of competing until her coach, Dr. Cynthia Simon of BYB Fitness, encouraged her to evaluate her strength at Jacksonville’s Senior Games. She not only qualified, but won her 5K at the local level, then carried that momentum to the state competition, and finally all the way to Nationals.

Training with Purpose

What made the difference? Strategy. Under Dr. Simon’s guidance, Annette embraced new approaches: easing into the first mile, focusing on form, and using sprints around corners to stay sharp. With detailed training plans, pre-race checklists, and constant encouragement, she arrived at Nationals prepared, confident, and calm. “I felt better than expected in both races,” Annette reflected, “and I enjoyed them more too.”

Fierce and Supported

Annette describes the Senior Games as exhilarating, “like Christmas morning.” But her success wasn’t a solo effort. Team Big Red, her community of supporters and cheerleaders, played a huge role, providing encouragement every step of the way. Her husband was also by her side, supporting her journey with unwavering love and pride. Together, they helped Annette shine on the national stage.

Inspiration for All

As a Black woman competing in her age group, Annette understands the deeper impact of her achievement and the importance of visibility. Her message to others? Don’t settle. Movement is medicine, fun comes first, and it’s never too late to chase your strongest, happiest years.

With the support of her coach, Team Big Red, her community, and her friends, Annette Stevenson, aka Big Red is proof that champions are made not by age, but by attitude.
