Jumpstart Your Stalled Fitness Resolutions
How are those fitness resolutions going? It’s been almost two weeks since January 1st, and I’m sure that you’re feeling great about the new year and the opportunities it brought. But how many of us have actually stuck to our fitness goals since we made our resolutions? If the answer is “not me,” then this blog post is for you.
If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to make at least one new year’s fitness resolution. The question is, what are you going to do to improve your health this year? For many people, it is easy because they already have an idea of where their challenges lie and the changes, they need to make in order to get healthier.
Whether you’re a newbie or experienced at implementing your fitness resolutions, here are Four tips to get you started.
Develop a plan of action
Think about the end results you want to achieve in the upcoming year and build your plan accordingly. If you think about it, fitness is quite predictable, especially if you have a specific, well-thought-out plan of action.
- Create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) Goals to stay you on track.
Clean-up Your Nutrition
Achieving success in your fitness goals in the next year requires making nutrition a top priority. You will need to understand what foods are going to help you reach your goals while minimizing any negative effects or sacrifices along the way.
There is a lot of theory regarding healthy nutrition, but if we had to get it down to a couple of bullet points, here is what it would look like:
- Follow the Food Pyramid that includes five food groups – Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein Foods, and Dairy.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Only eat when you are hungry and avoid unnecessary snacking (i.e., snacking while binge watching television or just for the sake of snacking, etc.)
Get a Training and/or Accountability Buddy
Working out should be part of your SMART goals. Establish your routine. Most likely one of your family members or close friends has also set fitness goals, meaning that you will have someone like-minded close to you!
- Share your resolutions with your family and friends and get yourself an accountability buddy!
- Solicit your family and friends to workout with you.
- Share your healthy habits with your family and friends. This will help them understand your goals so that they can support your efforts. Do not be surprised if your successful habits rub off on them.
Inspect what you expect
- Throughout your fitness journey, you must track your progress and adjust your plan as needed. This allows you to identify things that you need to start, stop, or continue.
- Celebrate incremental successes and major milestones.
Fitness training and good nutrition are just two fundamentals for your new year’s resolutions. The next chapter of your fitness starts when you realize how much more than that you can do with your body and mind. Training isn’t just weights and cardio. For example, you have to understand why previous resolutions have not been successful to avoid the same pitfalls.
